The Indonesian Navy has established the Disaster Mitigation Command Post and Health Service Post in response to Saturday’s earthquake in the Karangasem and Bangli districts of Bali.
“The emergency response action aims to provide assistance to people affected by the earthquake. It is one of our obligations to always be ready to mitigate the impact of disasters,” Commander of the Denpasar Naval Base, Colonel I Komang Teguh Ardana, said in a press release issued here on Monday.
The obligation he referred to has been categorized as Military Operations other than War, as stated in Law Number 34/2004 concerning the Indonesian National Defence Forces.
Personnel from the naval base have been divided into several teams, he said. A team of 17 personnel has been deployed to remove debris caused by landslides off a cliff, he added.
Meanwhile, seven personnel have been assigned to clean up the debris of collapsed buildings, Ardana informed.
A medical team comprising four personnel has also been formed, while another four personnel have been tasked to serve as a post team, he said.
The naval base has also provided 60 packages of basic necessities aids to quake victims in Bangli district, he added. In addition, clothes have been also provided to them, he continued.
The team also has a truck, an ambulance, one set of troop tents, one set of navy tents, and rubber boats at its disposal he said.
A shallow earthquake rocked the districts of Karangasem and Bangli at 4:18 a.m. Central Indonesia Standard Time (WITA) on Saturday. Its epicenter was located in the 8.32 degrees south latitude and 115.45 degrees east longitude at a depth of 10 kilometers (km), officials said.
As of 4.42 a.m. WITA, two aftershocks of 3.8 and 2.7 magnitude, respectively, were reported by the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency.
The disaster claimed two lives, while some of the survivors were reported to have suffered bone fractures, officials said. (
