Ministry encourages development of museums for educational purposes

The Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture (Kemenko PMK) has encouraged regional governments and relevant parties to improve and develop museums as places for the younger generation to learn about culture and history.

“The Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture encourages regional governments and other parties to develop museums as a means of education for the nation’s next generation,” the ministry’s Deputy for Coordination of Mental Revolution, Advancement of Culture and Sports Achievement Didik Suhardi stated when contacted here on Monday.

Suhardi explained that the preservation of museums is a shared task of the government, regional governments, museum activists, and also the community.

“Museums, as cultural treasures, must be preserved, protected, cared for, developed, facilitated, and also utilized wisely,” he remarked.

According to Suhardi, museums should be managed properly by human resources, with skills related to museum development. Therefore, a training program for museum managers should be provided.

“Thus, it is hoped that we would continue to manage museums to make them more modern and attractive, so that children are more interested in coming to museums,” he explained.

Suhardi explained that innovation is deemed crucial in order to make museums comfortable places that can also be utilized for cultural activities, thereby boosting the number of visitors.

Thereafter, dissemination of information on museums, with specific focus on the community, must continue to be conducted in order to boost the community’s interest in visiting museums, he remarked.

Suhardi suggested that several strategic programs should be implemented to attract the youth.

“For instance, by transforming museums with science and technology,” he remarked.

In addition, he assessed that museums should be complemented with supporting facilities, for instance, a canteen and coffee shop.

“The presence of clean museums and other facilities is essential, so is an adequate budget, so that the maintenance can be optimal,” he remarked.
