Marine innovation research to support priority programs: ministry

The Indonesian Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry will continue to bolster various research and innovations in a bid to support the ministry’s priority programs, including increasing non-tax state revenues or locally known as PNBP in fisheries sector.

In a press statement here on Tuesday, Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Wahyu Trenggono underscored the criticality of technological research and innovation to build a more modern and productive maritime and fishery sector.

The minister also highlighted the significance of measured resource management that strikes a fine balance between economy and ecology.

Trenggono believes that the massive implementation of technological research and application will also improve the quality and quantity of maritime and fishery products while concomitantly preserving the environment.

Intensive collaboration with other institutions is an approach to reinforcing technological research and innovation, according to Trenggono.

“I am optimistic that intensive collaboration would produce accurate, up-to-date, and beneficial technology that also aligns with the potential and requirements of those involved in maritime and fisheries,” the minister reiterated. The Ministry’s acting Head of Research and Human Resources Kusdiantoro stated that research and innovation will be conducted to support three of the ministry’s priority programs.

These programs are increasing non-tax state revenues, developing fish cultivation to increase exports, as well constructing fishing villages in fresh water, brackish water, and sea water.

Kusdiantoro also highlighted the ministry’s several research and innovations, including the Bali Radar Ground Receiving Station, which is an advanced radar operated by the Ocean Research and Observation Center.

Through the application of this technology, the ministry can detect illegal practices, such as unreported, unregulated fishing as well as oil spills in Indonesia’s oceans.
