Mandalika MotoGP spectators will enjoy 5G mobile network: minister

Minister of Communication and Informatics Johnny G. Plate on Tuesday confirmed that tourists and spectators at the Mandalika MotoGP in March will enjoy 5G mobile network services.

“We will prepare two 5G experiences for MotoGP spectators, those are a 5G connectivity experience and a 5G technology exhibition,” Plate informed.

National mobile network providers Telkomsel and XL Axiata will provide 5G services for tourists at the Mandalika Circuit and hotels, he said.

The mobile providers will use the 2.1GHz and 3.5GHz frequency bands, and tourists will need to ensure their phone units and SIM cards are compatible with the network to enjoy 5G connectivity, the minister added.

The ministry is committed to supporting the 2022 Mandalika MotoGP championship by ensuring the availability of information and technology infrastructures for the event, Plate said.

He confirmed that the ministry has organized a trial to test the combined provision of 5G and satellite services. The trial concluded that 5G technology will be safe to use and will not disrupt satellite services in the region, he said.

The ministry has also examined existing 4G network installations at several locations that are expected to become the center of activities during the MotoGP championship, such as the circuit, the airport, hotels, restaurants, and tourist attraction sites, the minister informed.

During the examination, the average Internet speed at tested locations was in the range of 10Mbps to 50Mbps, he said.

The minister also confirmed that Telkomsel and XL Axiata will organize a 5G technology exposition in the Mandalika Circuit area to showcase 5G technology and introduce residents to its potential uses.

A motorcycle match game using augmented reality, 360-degree cameras that will capture live broadcasts of the race, cloud computing-based robots and games, as well as a prototype of a drone would be exhibited during the exposition, Plate informed.
