Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Jakarta administration has accrued Rp6.9 billion in fines from firms, cafes, and restaurants that failed to comply with health protocols during the COVID-19 pandemic, Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan stated.
“We have slapped fines to the tune of Rp6.9 billion (in the wake of) the violation,” Baswedan noted during a crackdown on businesses, cafes, and restaurants violating health protocols in Kemang, South Jakarta, on Friday night.
In accordance with Jakarta Governor Regulation No. 3 of 2021, any restaurant, food stall, or cafe found to have repeatedly violated health protocols is liable to a fine of up to Rp50 million and may have its permit revoked.
During the crackdown, officers still found violation of the imposed restrictions on the number of visitors to a maximum capacity of 50 percent.
The governor explained that the sanction was imposed not only on restaurants, food stalls, and cafes but also on visitors not wearing masks.
A visitor found not wearing a mask is fined up to Rp50 thousand.
The sanction aims to not only uphold the gubernatorial regulation but also to protect residents from exposure to COVID-19, he emphasized.
The number of fresh COVID-19 cases in Jakarta soared in recent weeks.
The governor had earlier attributed the recent spike in COVID-19 cases in the capital to the Eid holidays that led to a new wave of coronavirus infections.
Baswedan again made an earnest request to those residing in Jakarta to not venture out of their homes on the weekend in the wake of a spike in COVID-19 cases.
A 50-percent increase in infections was recorded in the capital city, with the number of cases soaring to 17,400 on June 11, 2021, from 11,500 on June 6, 2021, according to Baswedan.
The COVID-19 positivity rate also rose to 17 percent on Sunday (June 13), from nine percent a week earlier.
