Indonesia pushes for strengthening understanding on data governance

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia through Digital Economy Working Group (DEWG) encourages G20 countries to strengthen understanding on data governance.

“Data on e-commerce platforms may cross national borders. So our goal at the G20 is to strengthen data governance,” said the DEWG Chairperson of the G20 Indonesia Presidency, Mira Tayyiba in a press release on Sunday.

The use of data traffic flows globally in the 2020-2026 period, she said, is estimated to increase by three times. Currently, there are different backgrounds in data governance in each country.

The flow of data management used by various countries is for the benefit of corporations, individuals, and the state.

“So when we talk about good governance, which governance is appropriate? The issues of Cross-Border Data Flow (CBDF) and Data Free-Flow with Trust (DFFT) are the most exciting because the more we use the digital space intensively, the more we will talk about data,” said Tayyiba.

DEWG, she said, seeks to build a common understanding on data management so that G20 member countries can learn from each other and understand each other.

Through a mutual understanding, G20 member countries can seek common principles as the basis for cross-border data flow, including the principles of lawfulness, transparency, fairness and reciprocity.

The discussion on the issue of data flow across national borders, said Tayyiba, aims to show the important role of data in digital economic opportunities. The forum also provides definitions of personal data, both in general and in particular.

Three governance principles which include legitimacy, fairness and transparency can be applied to data in general. While the principle of reciprocity applies to personal data.

Tayyiba said the principles were still under discussion, and no conclusions had been drawn.

The third DEWG addresses the issue of cross-border data flows developed in the Italian G20 Presidency. The discussion aims to reach an understanding on a clear general definition of trust and general principles on cross-border data flow activities.

The results of the agreement will be applied at a practical level.

In the meantime, G20 is an international forum comprising 19 countries and the European Union that work together to handle major issues. Indonesia is holding the G20 Presidency this year.
