House speaker presses for thorough probe into military post attack

House Speaker Puan Maharani has urged the government to conduct a thorough investigation into Thursday’s attack on a military post in West Papua Province that resulted in the deaths of four army personnel.

Maharani also offered deep condolences to the families of the fallen army soldiers.

“This is condolence to the entire Indonesian nation. Let me extend my deep condolences to the families of military personnel that were killed while performing their duties in Aifat Sub-district,” she emphasized.

Investigation into the fatal attack should also cover the identification of problems, so that similar incidents do not recur and increase in future, she cautioned.

Maharani stressed on the importance of preventive efforts to protect civilians and soldiers from falling victims to such attacks in future, so that their wives and children will not lose important members of their families.

Security and stability in Papua and West Papua must be prioritized the more so since Papua will host the 20th National Sports Week (PON) in October 2021, she affirmed.

“Regardless of the event, equitable development can be realized and enjoyed by the people if stability and security is maintained, she emphasized.

Four army personnel died in a fatal attack by suspected Papuan separatist terrorists on the Kisor military post in South Aifat Sub-district, Maybrat District, West Papua, in the wee hours of Thursday.

The four personnel have been confirmed dead while another remains untraceable, according to spokesperson for the Regional Military Command XVIII/Kasuari, Lt Col Hendra Pesireron.

Members of an unidentified group ambushed the soldiers while they were sleeping at the post, he stated. Second Sergeant Amrosius, Chief Private Dirham, First Private Zul Ansari, and First Lieutenant Dirman died in the attack, he noted.

The bodies of the three soldiers were found at the post, while another was retrieved in the bushes not far from the post, Pesireron remarked, adding that another soldier, First Private Ikbal, was yet untraceable.

The assault on the Kisor military post in West Papua has added to the list of cases of armed violence in Papua and highlighted the grave danger posed by Papuan separatist terrorists.
