Get to know your partner to prevent domestic violence: Ministry

Jakarta The Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection Ministry urged women to get to know their partners before taking the next step in their relationship to prevent unhealthy relationships and the practice of domestic violence.

Women can coax their partners into opening up about their background or familial circumstances to know whether they have had a happy childhood free from trauma, the ministry’s official Eni Widiyanti noted in a discussion here, Friday.

If they had no traumatic experience, then it is a sign that they are a safe relationship partner, she stated during a discussion themed “Prevent Women from Being Trapped in a Toxic Relationship with Possessive Men.”

She remarked that several teenagers chose their partners based on their physical characteristics alone without getting to know about their personality.

The ministry also highlighted a phenomenon wherein several couples tolerate violence in their relationship since they were in love with one another.

This is despite the fact that violence can repeatedly occur in a relationship, and the intensity can increase.

For instance, domestic violence can begin on a small scale, but it can gradually escalate into a life-threatening danger, she highlighted.

To this end, the ministry urged women to choose a good partner based on their level of awareness of the person and not merely on the basis of feelings of love.

During the event, Widiyanti also emphasized that there was no room for tolerance for any form of violence, including verbal or mental.

“All (forms of) domestic violence cannot be tolerated. In fact, verbal violence, in the eyes of the ministry, is not right,” she emphasized.

She underlined that women that do not experience physical violence but face verbal or mental violence or experience abandonment are the victims of violence.
