Fredy Setiawan bags Indonesia’s 4th bronze medal at Tokyo Paralympics

The Indonesia’s Merah Putih contingent bagged the fourth bronze medal at 2020 Tokyo Paralympics after badminton player Fredy Setiawan won the match for the third podium at Yoyogi National Stadium, Tokyo, on Sunday.

He played strictly for 32 minutes defeating Indian player Tarun 21-17, 21-11 in bronze medal match for men’s single SL4.

Setiawan was left behind in the first game when Tarun constantly attacked him and led the game.

However, Setiawan turned things around as he played more patiently and was able to utilize the chance carefully to add the points.

The fourth ranked athlete from Solo, Central Java, apparently faced no significant obstacles in the second game.

After the second interval, Setiawan’s pace became more and more unstoppable and left a 10-point difference at the end of the match.

During Tokyo Paralympics, he had faced the second ranked athlete twice where the first meeting was in the Group B qualification game.

In the first game on Friday, Setiawan also defeated the Indian athlete and broke the dominance of three consecutive victories on previous game records.

Earlier Indonesia’s para-badminton player Leani Ratri Oktila won the silver medal in women’s singles SL4. However, her struggle was stopped by Chinese player Cheng He Fang in a 50-minute rubber game.

Indonesia has one more opportunity to bag the second gold medal in the mixed doubles SL3-SU5 Hary Susanto-Leani Ratri Oktila. The first ranked pair will face French pair Lucas Mazur-Faustine Noel in the final game.
