Digital TV will offer child-friendly features: government official

Digital terrestrial television will have friendly features for children and be equipped with parental control options, Director of Broadcasting of the Directorate General of Posts and Informatics Operations at the Ministry of Communication and Informatics Geryantika Kurnia said. During a webinar held on Wednesday, he said “digital broadcasts are child-friendly because there is a parental lock.”

“Parental control allows parents to set which television programs their children can watch. When a parent feels a program is not appropriate for the child’s age, they can lock it so a child cannot watch it. This child-friendly feature is just one of the advantages offered by digital terrestrial television,” he said.

According to Kurnia, digital television offers features that are usually present on subscribed or paid television, such as program schedules on television stations and movie synopses, and the coverage of digital television is also wider than analog.

Regarding analog, he said the further a television is from the transmitter tower, the lower the quality of the broadcast. For example, pixelated patterns on televisions are likely to appear in analog, he said.

In addition, the quality of analog television is heavily influenced by the weather, so people are often disrupted when they are watching television during heavy rains, he further added.

Meanwhile, digital television is not affected by the distance between the transmitter tower, so as long as the device can capture the frequency, the broadcast will appear on the screen, he explained.

The government regulates the coverage of multiple providers, so digital television coveragecan be evenly distributed throughout Indonesia.

Therefore, after the end of analog broadcasts or analog switch-off (ASO), digital terrestrial television is expected to reach blank spots and areas where analog TV could not reach.
