Death toll from Kabul sports gym bomb blasts rises to 25 with 95 wounded

Kabul, The death toll has risen to 25 while 95 others were wounded in a twin bomb blasts which struck a sports gym in Kabul on Wednesday evening, a police spokesman said Thursday.

The first explosion occurred at 5:55 p.m. local time after a terrorist shot dead a security guard and detonated his explosive belt inside Maywand Wrestling Gym in Dasht-i-Barchi neighborhood, killing six sportsmen and injuring 10 others, HashmatStanikzai, Kabul police spokesman, told Xinhua.

The second blast occurred outside the compound about an hour later, after a car bombing was detonated, targeting responding police, reporters and crowd of people gathering near the site.

A journalist and a cameraman working for local TV channel Tolo News TV also lost their lives and four reporters were wounded in the car bomb explosion.

Many of the injured, including several policemen, remained in critical condition.

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah, UN mission in Afghanistan and journalist associations condemned the attack.

According to Xinhua, the Islamic State (IS) group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The neighborhood has been hit by a series of terror attacks since the beginning this year.

On Aug. 15, 75 youths were killed and over 70 others injured after an IS terrorist struck an educational center in Dasht-i-Barchi.
