BMKG forecasts hail, extreme weather in Java

Jakarta The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has asked the public in Java, particularly central and eastern Java, to be on alert for hail and extreme weather during the transition from rainy to dry season.

“We urge people in most parts of Java, especially in Central and East Java, to be aware of the potential for extreme weather, which is quite high in this transitional season,” said head of BMKG’s weather prediction sub-division, Muhammad Fadli, when contacted on Thursday.

The change in season from rainy to dry or vice versa often triggers moderate to heavy rain, including the phenomenon of hail, he stated. The phenomenon is caused by differences in air pressure in the atmosphere, he explained.

Based on observations, he said, rain clouds are still covering parts of central and eastern Java. Central to northern Kalimantan could also potentially experience a similar possibility, he added.

Therefore, people must remain careful, he cautioned.

The phenomenon of hail in Yogyakarta and Kalimantan occurs simultaneously with heavy rains, he informed. Hail usually occurs in the period from afternoon to evening and lasts a brief 5-15 minutes, he added.

“In the future, the potential for hail will still remain until the end of the transition season,” said Fadli.

He then appealed to the public to rely on the official channels of the government agency for information on weather.

“The public can access information on the BMKG website directly,” said Fadli.
