The House of Representatives’ (DPR’s) Commission II and the general elections organizer agreed on a budget of Rp86 trillion for the 2024 general elections.
Thus, the 2024 election budget need not become a polemic, especially when it is associated with the proposal for postponement of the 2024 elections, Deputy Chairman of the House Commission II Junimart Girsang noted here on Wednesday.
“Who says there is a polemic related to the 2024 election budget? The House Commission II has agreed on the 2024 election budget of Rp86 trillion,” he stated.
Girsang noted that the House Commission II is awaiting a follow up to the discussion of the 2024 election budget at DPR’s Budget Committee (Banggar DPR).
Girsang spoke of having held an informal meeting with the Banggar DPR leadership to discuss about the election budget. However, he refused to divulge the outcome of the meeting.
“The House Commission II has followed up on it through the informal meeting. I have spoken about it with the Banggr DPR leadership,” he stated.
Girsang affirmed that the House Commission II will hold a hearing with the General Elections Commission (KPU) and General Election Supervisory Board (Bawaslu) on April 1, 2022, to evaluate the realization of the 2021 program and budget.
While visiting the Office of Nahdlatul Ulama’s (NU’s) Central Executive Board in Central Jakarta on Tuesday, House Speaker Puan Maharani remarked that the government, DPR, and KPU agreed that the general elections will be held on February 14, 2024.
Some political parties in Joko Widodo administration’s coalition have spoken out in favor of postponing the 2024 general elections.
Chairman of the National Awakening Party (PKB) Muhaimin Iskandar suggested that the 2024 general elections be postponed due to sluggish economic conditions.
Chairman of the National Mandate Party (PAN) Zulkifli Hasan and Golkar Party Chairman Airlangga Hartarto affirmed that their parties support the postponement.
However, Secretary General of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) Hasto Kristiyanto has brushed aside the proposal for suspending the general elections, saying he believes that it lacks a strong legal basis.
“It also ignores the most fundamental aspect in politics that requires discipline and compliance with the Constitution,” he noted in a written statement released in Jakarta recently.
