Ministry raises awareness on migrant workers’ law through art

The Ministry of Manpower is disseminating information on Law No. 18 of 2017 on Indonesian Migrant Workers’ Protection, or the PMI Protection Law, through a traditional art performance.

According to a press statement issued on Monday, a Ludruk Performance and Gergeran Carnival was held at the Bantarangin Monument, Ponorogo, East Java, on Sunday evening to disseminate information about the law.

Thousands of people watched the traditional art performance, which was themed “Do Not Leave Before You Are Ready” and showcased traditional artistes such as Kirun and Kartolo.

“It is a surprise to see the people in Ponorogo and its surrounding area to participate in disseminating the law through this ludruk media,” the ministry’s secretary general, Anwar Sanusi, remarked after the performance.

The government utilized the traditional ludruk performance to raise awareness about the Indonesian Migrant Workers’ Protection Law so that the information surrounding the effort to protect workers could be absorbed by the people more easily.

Sanusi underlined the importance of getting people to understand the procedure of finding work abroad and ensuring that companies providing overseas placement services have the required permits.

“In order to see companies’ permit, you can look at the Jendela PMI application on Android, or you can ask the Manpower Office in districts, cities, or One-Stop Integrated Service (LTSA),” he informed.

He also reminded the people to not be lured by promises of large allowances and salaries offered by companies offering overseas placement services.

Meanwhile, Kirun lauded the government’s efforts to utilize a traditional art performance to disseminate information on the Indonesian Migrant Workers’ Protection Law.

“Dissemination through this ludruk is very effective,” he remarked.

“If it’s done through officials’ speech, sometimes the conveyed programs would not be heard, but if it’s through traditional arts such as this one, it will quickly be absorbed,” he said.

After Ponorogo, traditional ludruk performances are also planned in Blitar, Tulungagung, and Malang to disseminate information on the Indonesian Migrant Workers’ Protection Law.

West Java sends flagship coffee products for exhibition in Italy

The West Java provincial government has sent its flagship coffee products to be showcased at the World of Coffee exhibition in Milan, Italy, scheduled on June 23-25, 2022.

Head of the West Java Tourism and Culture Office Benny Bachtiar noted here on Monday that World of Coffee is the most prominent coffee trade show in Europe.

The World of Coffee Exhibition is an event for the coffee community worldwide, organized by the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA), a non-profit organization comprising thousands of professional coffee industry players, from coffee producers to baristas.

World of Coffee aims to develop and promote the world’s leading specialty coffee, and participation in it has snowballed, from three thousand visitors and 45 exhibitors to 10,945 visitors and 240 exhibitors in the last six years.

Bachtiar noted that curation of West Java’s best coffee products had been conducted for the province to partake in the exhibition.

Of the 166 samples of coffee products submitted, 10 coffee products of West Java’s local farmers were selected: six of arabica coffee, three of robusta coffee, and one of liberica coffee.

According to Bachtiar, the international coffee market is huge. Thus, with the abundant potential of West Java coffee, West Java’s coffee products are expected to capture a place in the world market.

He affirmed that West Java Province was passionate about promoting coffee as part of its tourism.

“So far, we have introduced coffee as an export commodity without explaining the stories. Now, we want to introduce them,” he noted.

“Apart from that, we also want our coffee prices to be competitive and get certificates of geographical indication. We also want to develop coffee tourism in West Java,” he remarked.

He highlighted that the World of Coffee is an international event that West Java’s coffee entrepreneurs must utilize to promote their products.

Eid exodus ran smoothly due to stakeholders’ collaboration: Minister

Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi attributed the smooth running of the 2022 Eid al-Fitr homecoming exodus (mudik) to the collaboration of all stakeholders.

“Collaboration is essential. Coordination between stakeholders and synergy between the central government and regional governments were effective in reducing traffic congestion during the exodus (period),” he noted during a working meeting with Commission V of the House of Representatives (DPR) here on Monday.

Sumadi remarked that in general, the 2022 Eid homecoming exodus was conducted smoothly, in order, under control, and in accordance with strict COVID-19 health protocols.

He affirmed that the Ministry of Transportation, as the coordinator of the implementation of the exodus, continued to coordinate and collaborate with stakeholders, such as the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing, State-owned Enterprises, National Police (Polri), Indonesian Military (TNI), Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), regional governments, and mass media.

“Synergy cannot be taken lightly. It is a must. Therefore, we really appreciate it,” he stressed.

Apart from the collaboration and coordination, he pointed out that traffic management implemented during the exodus had also helped to handle transportation-related issues.

In the land transportation sector, traffic engineering, such as contraflow, one-way policy, and the odd-even system, run smoothly through the police’s discretion.

Moreover, the ministry continually monitors the movement of people using sea, air, and rail transportation modes during the Eid exodus period.

He remarked that the free transportation program for the exodus had also helped to reduce the number of traffic accidents.

To this end, the ministry is planning to increase funding for the free transportation program for the Eid exodus in the following years and boost people’s participation in the program.

Communities suggest JIS to be officially renamed after MH Thamrin

Some members of the public have suggested the Jakarta International Stadium (JIS) in North Jakarta to be renamed after the national hero Mohammad Husni Thamrin, who hailed from Jakarta.

Historian J. J. Rizal stated that the stadium’s name must be dedicated to figures, who played a greater role in various national aspects apart from sports, which Thamrin had exemplified by utilizing football to advance his nationalistic struggle for Indonesia’s independence.

“The name will match the grandeur of the building with Husni Thamrin’s monumental role and struggle in the national football and nationalism movement as a single face of Indonesia,” Rizal stated during the online seminar “Why MH Thamrin must be the official name of JIS” here on Monday.

The historian highlighted that Thamrin understood the potential of sports to advance the national movement. He was the founder of Jakarta-based football club Voetbalbond Indonesische Jacarta (VIJ), the first football club with the “Indonesia” name, which the Dutch colonial authority at that time raised a warning to, he pointed out.

Thamrin, who was a member of the colonial administration’s People’s Council, was also among the pioneers in football in Jakarta, Rizal remarked while stating that the point proves that the youth-driven nationalism movement was closely related to the national football sports.

During the independence struggle, football was the arsenal of national politics, and Jakarta was the heart of Indonesia’s nationalist football, he noted.

By assessing the historical accounts of Thamrin, it can be concluded that he had indirectly established Indonesia’s national football that is thriving until now, Rizal stated.

Meanwhile, Thamrin’s granddaughter, Dieny Tjokro, expressed optimism that by anointing MH Thamrin’s name to JIS, a stunning soccer stadium built by the Jakarta administration under the leadership of Governor Anies Baswedan and his deputy Ahmad Riza Patria, Thamrin’s integrity and professionalism will be propagated to the Indonesian football athletes.

“He had fought for the nation, and (I believe), for the good of the Betawi community and the national independence, this is something profound that must be instilled (in the hearts and minds of) our football athletes,” Tjokro remarked.

Police assists nationwide renovations of 11,932 places of worship

The Indonesian National Police has provided assistance for the renovation of 11,932 worship places of various religious denominations throughout Indonesia to welcome the 76th Bhayangkara Day.

“The National Police organises this activity together in various worship places throughout Indonesia to enhance cooperation with religious leaders and figures,” Chief of the Indonesian Police General Listyo Sigit Prabowo stated at the social work launch event here on Monday.

Prabowo remarked that the assistance to renovate worship places is the police’s effort to maintain religious harmony, promote tolerance among different religious denominations, and be present to attend to the basic needs of the people.

The renovation package, encompassing assistance to repair roofs and floors, repainting, and boosting internet connectivity, has been granted to 5,536 mosques, 3,110 churches, 1,302 Hindu temples, 1,108 Buddhist temples, and 876 Chinese temples, the general elaborated.

Prabowo revealed that apart from providing renovation packages, the social work, held simultaneously by all 34 regional police forces, will also distribute 178,974 social aid packages, including 100 thousand masks, to residents.

The police’s social assistance will be provided to poor residents affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, such as scavengers, fishermen, motorcycle taxi drivers, MSMEs entrepreneurs, factory workers, orphanages and nursing homes, university students, police retirees, and other eligible residents, he noted.

The police chief then urged police officers and managers of worship places to maintain solidity and synergy, uphold unity, and respect religious tolerance as elucidated in tenets of the national ideology of Pancasila and the Preamble and Article 29 of the 1945 Constitution.

“Maintain our unity and respect religious tolerance. Our Constitution respects religious freedom, and it is the police’s obligation to protect residents while conducting their daily worship,” Prabowo remarked.

He then engaged in dialogue with some managers of worship places that expressed their gratitude for the police’s efforts in ensuring their freedom of worship.

“Thank you for the attentiveness of the police and other residents, particularly the religious community that can hold each other’s hands to bolster the nation’s belief in God and become a better nation,” a pastor from Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara, said while expressing his gratitude to the police chief through video conference.

Strengthening global health architecture through G20 forum

Indonesia has chosen global health architecture as one of its key priority issues during this year’s G20 presidency following the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic that has had a multidimensional impact on the global community.

Through the G20 forum, Indonesia will encourage the strengthening of global health resilience and help make the global health system more inclusive, equitable, and responsive to crises.

As an effort, the Ministry of Health of Indonesia is holding the 1st G20 Health Ministerial Meeting (HMM) in Yogyakarta on June 20-21, 2022, which brings together health ministers from G20 members along with representatives from relevant international organizations to discuss the strategic topics of strengthening the global health system, joint recognition of international travel mobilization certificates, as well as building manufacturing and research centers.

The goal of such discussion is to make the world better prepared to face the threat of any future pandemics.

On the first day of the meeting, G20 members and several international organizations agreed to work together to create the Financial Intermediary Fund (FIF) to help countries in need to face any pandemic in future.

“We are very excited to convey our promise to the global community that we will create an emergency fund scheme to be used during a future pandemic,” Indonesian Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin, who presided over the meeting, remarked.

To date, the G20 has pushed for an emergency fundraising commitment of around US$1.2 billion from five member countries and one international social organization to mobilize the role of FIF.

The commitment came from the United States, which contributed US$450 million; the European Union, US$450 million; Germany contributed 50 million euros; Indonesia US$50 million; Singapore, US$10 million; and the Wellcome Trust contributed US$12.3 million.

The World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Bank estimated that US$31 billion is required annually for strengthening global health security, according to WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

About two-third of that fund could come from existing resources but that leaves a gap of US$10 billion per year. Hence, he expects that the FIF would help close that gap.

WHO and the World Bank have been cooperating to establish the FIF, which would be overseen by a board that takes a decision on funding allocation supported by a technical advisory panel.

Both the board and the technical advisory panel would be supported by the joint WHO-WB secretariat based at the Bank’s headquarters in Washington, with assisting staff from the WHO.

According to the plan, the Bank will provide financial and administrative leadership at the secretariat, operate as a representative for the FIF, hold and transfer relief funds, as well as provide administrative services.

Meanwhile, the WHO will provide technical leadership; coordinate input for the technical advisory panel; and prepare relevant technical documentation, recommendations, and reports for the council.

Both the World Bank and WHO will act as implementing entities, along with other global health partners with relevant expertise, including the Global Fund, the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI), and the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI).

“We look forward to your active participation in building and financing a FIF that is inclusive, equitable, and effective in making our world safer from pandemics,” Tedros noted.

GISAID+

In addition to funding, the G20 health ministers also discussed cooperation in sharing epidemic and pandemic virus data through the GISAID+ initiative.

Sadikin emphasized that the concept of GISAID+ is a global surveillance network that allows each country to discuss when pathogens that have the potential to trigger the next pandemic are identified anywhere in the world.

“We will also discuss what if in the next pandemic when a country goes into lockdown, but we can still move labor and goods,” he said.

The development adds to the viral variants reported for all types of non-influenza pathogens, bacteria or viruses.

“The difference with GISAID+ (is that) the mechanism of the variants that will be reported is more diverse, not only influenza, (but) there is (also) monkeypox and others,” Indonesian Health Ministry’s Secretary General Kunta Wibawa Dasa Nugraha explained.

GISAID+ is also directed to become a forum for the development of knowledge among researchers and related institutions in the world in formulating steps to mitigate the pandemic risk in future.

Under such cooperation, the national and international pharmaceutical industry are also expected to adapt quickly to the development of vaccine and drug products.

After the COVID-19 pandemic, the health security system has become a policy that requires urgent improvements, as the world bears witness to the devastating loss of human lives and disruption of socio-economic aspects.

The concrete steps discussed at the G20 1st HMM Forum are expected to continue to mature the embryo to give rise to a global health architecture that is resilient to face future pandemics.
