Indonesia secures US$44.6 billion investment commitments from UAE

Indonesia has managed to secure US$44.6 billion investment commitments from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) during the visit of President Joko Widodo (jokowi) to the Arab country.

The investment would focus mainly on three sectors, notably renewable energy, industries based on good environmental management, and investment with good collaboration, according to Investment Minister Bahlil Lahadalia.

“In order to make a quick response to realize the concept of joint investment between Indonesia and the UAE, we have been instructed to take care of all matters related to licensing and other facilitation needed by UAE investors in Indonesia,” he said in a statement on Sunday.

Bahlil, who accompanied President Jokowi during the Indonesia-UAE Business Forum in Dubai on Thursday (November 4, 2021), expressed his readiness to welcome investment from the UAE and accelerate the realization of the great vision of the two countries.

The business meeting was attended by nine UAE companies that already have an interest in investing in Indonesia for both new and expansion investments.

Several companies present expressed their commitment to invest in Indonesia adding to the b-to-b agreements that had been exchanged in front of the leaders of the two countries.

Some of those who expressed commitments include Al Dahra Group (dairy products), Yas Holding (agriculture), Emirates Global Alumunium (aluminum smelters), Damac Properties (properties) and AMEA Power (renewable energy).

In total, investment commitments during the president’s visit to the UAE reached US$44.6 billion, including the investment value of the Memorandum of Understanding worth US$15 billion between the Ministry of Investment and Air Products from the United States.

Speaking at the forum, President Jokowi emphasized the commitment of the Indonesian government to downstream and stop the export of raw mineral products to international markets.

“We will continue to prohibit the export of metal mineral products–after aluminum and nickel, maybe later copper–to support the investors to build value-added industries in Indonesia,” said the president when responding to Emirates Global Aluminum (EGA)’s plan to invest in Indonesia, in partnership with PT Inalum (Persero).

Meanwhile, UAE Minister of Energy and Industry Suhail Mohammed Al Mazrouei who represented the UAE government expressed his appreciation for the very close relationship between the two leaders.

Suhail said that the UAE wanted to cooperate with Indonesia, not only because Indonesia has the world’s largest Muslim population, but also has the capability, resources and strategic position in the international stage.

“We have a high target from the cooperation signed today. The UAE government has a special interest in the construction of Indonesia’s new capital city. In addition, we also see interest from the UAE private sector. We need guidance from President Jokowi and other ministers to ensure that our commitment can be realized well,” Suhail noted.

Sports Minister optimistic Peparnas will revive badminton athletes

Youth and Sports Minister Zainudin Amali has said he is optimistic the XVI National Paralympic Week (Peparnas) in Papua will aid the emergence of badminton athletes.

The badminton matches took place at the Cendrawasih Sports Center on Saturday.

“The matches of badminton at XVI Papua Peparnas are participated by many new athletes who are very excited to compete,” he said while reviewing the first day of the badminton competitions.

The athlete’s enthusiasm is extraordinary as they are encouraged by the success of Indonesian athletes, who won two gold, two silver, and two bronze medals at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics, he added.

He admitted that, at first, he thought it would be a little difficult to scout athletes for the upcoming 2024 Paris Paralympics.

However, there are many rising players who have good quality, he remarked, adding he is optimistic about the development of sports for disabled people in Indonesia.

“Especially since the National Paralympic Committee (NPC) is very serious in preparing the athletes. We will motivate them to get ready for the Paralympics,” the minister said.

Earlier, he had said that XVI Papua Peparnas will serve as a platform to scout young athletes who will later be trained at the National Training Center (Pelatnas) in Solo city, Central Java province.

“Hopefully, there will be additional athletes who can qualify for the 2024 Paris Paralympics from the 12 sports contested in XVI Papua Peparnas,” he added.

A number of matches took place on the first day of the national sporting event on Saturday along with athletics and table tennis.

The XVI Papua Peparnas is being conducted in two clusters of Jayapura city and Jayapura district. At least 1,985 athletes from all provinces — except West Sulawesi — are participating in the event.

The National Paralympic Week has been prepared thoroughly based on previous experience from the XX National Sports Week.

“It’s not much different from the previous ones. But this one done in Papua was preceded with the success of PON, so it’s not too difficult,” Youth and Sports Minister Zainudin Amali said.

Youth and Sports Ministry has collaborated with its stakeholders to prepare disabled-friendly facilities that cater to their comfort, including lodging needs.

“There are some things that need to be changed, such as the readiness to serve National Paralympic Week athletes and officials, such as wheelchair access, which was not available in the lobby, (so) we are making it in time being,” said Sales Manager of the Hotel in Jayapura, Dedy Arisanti.

Other preparations that have been made include the addition of equipment such as bucket baths, dipper for those with disabilities, and also handrails in some locations deemed risky.

The complete supporting facilities are now provided in 39 hotels and inns as well as athletes’ homestays in Jayapura City and Regency to accommodate 3,500 athletes and officials.

“Our problem is that in Papua there are often hotels that do not have access for people with disabilities. But thanks to our coordination, hotels are willing to help,” Grand Management Papua National Paralympic Week Accommodation Coordinator John Mahumury said.

The government also assisted in all aspects needed during the 16th National Paralympic Week, match equipment, security and transportation designed to be disability-friendly. The aspects of consumption, information technology and publications as well as health also did not go unnoticed.

Talent

Carrying the theme ‘Light from East Papua’, this National Paralympic Week brings a line of talented athletes who have won in prestigious national and international championships.

Papua National Paralympic Week sets the stage for the young athletes to showcase their talent, making their debut against a series of outstanding athletes, as well as being a hope for the Indonesian contingent when participating in international championships.

“The target of National Paralympic Week this time is to achieve a successful regeneration of athletes with disabilities,” Deputy Secretary General of the Indonesian National Paralympic Committee (NPCI) Rima Ferdianto said in Jayapura on November 3.

“We make national and elite categories. Elites are athletes who have won in international competitions. National athlete categories are all those who have experience participating in international events,” he said.

The match system arranged in the match will greatly facilitate regeneration. Athletes in the elite category are only allowed to participate in one event.

On the other hand, athletes who are included in the national category can participate more than twice in a the number of matches. The regulation is imposed in order to offer opportunities for athletes with disabilities to develop even better.

National assets

Presidential Spokesperson for Social Affairs Angkie Yudistia said that the issuance of Presidential Regulation Number 67 of 2020 regarding the terms and procedures for awarding respect, protection, and fulfillment of the rights of persons with disabilities is President Jokowi’s progressive step in respecting the rights of persons with disabilities in Indonesia.

“We welcome National Paralympics Week as a fairly large sporting event. President Jokowi is very concerned about friends with disabilities as the best sons and daughters of Indonesia,” she said in Jakarta on November 3.

Yudistia has faith that every person with a disability must have self-potential that can be fostered through sports achievements. The government ensures that no citizen are left behind in any program, and that includes giving the same rights and treatment for 38 million people with disabilities in Indonesia, just like their able-bodied counterparts or general public.

Presidential Regulation Number 67 of 2020 encourages Indonesia to be more disabled-friendly by prioritizing the principle of equality, including in terms of giving bonuses to athletes with disabilities, who are the same as other general athletes.

The government’s commitment in coaching athletes with disabilities is also proven through the construction of a fully equipped training center with sports science.

“In the future, the President through the Youth and Sports Ministry is committed to building training centers with complete facilities and sports science. Sports centers will be built in ten provinces in Indonesia,” she said.

Physical limitations are not a barrier to being able to work and score achievements. Even people with disabilities can live independently through sports careers.

National Paralympic Week is a proving grounds for people with disabilities, that they also have the same rights and opportunities as everybody else. The government is also committed to be able to provide the best service for people with disabilities.
