XX Papua PON most difficult PON till date: Vice President Amin

At the closing ceremony of the XX Papua National Sports Week (PON) on Friday, Vice President Ma’ruf Amin noted three points that made the implementation of the event challenging.

“There were several things that made XX Papua PON not easy to be held,” he remarked at the Lukas Enembe Stadium, Jayapura district.

First, the national sports event required massive infrastructure development of international standards and quality, he said.

“Secondly, the venues were located in several regions, ranging from Jayapura city and district, Mimika district, to Merauke district. The distance between one venue and another is the farthest ever in PON implementation to date,” he added.

Meanwhile, the third challenge – and also the biggest one — was the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, he said. The XX Papua PON involved contingents from 34 provinces across Indonesia, the Vice President noted.

“The XX Papua PON was held in the midst of the pandemic. Thus, it required extra works with the implementation of strict health protocols,” he said.

He then lauded the Papuan people and provincial government for successfully implementing the XX Papua PON despite the challenges.

“I consider that XX Papua PON became the most difficult PON that had been implemented to date. However, it turns out that Papuan people are not only able to hold it, but they also managed to organize it perfectly. It is in line with the motto of ‘Torang Bisa’ (means ‘We Can’),” he emphasized.

The end of the national sports event was marked by the lowering of the PON flag.

Papua Governor Lukas Enembe handed the flag to North Sumatra Governor Edy Rahmayadi and Aceh provincial secretary, Nova Iriansyah, who represented the Aceh Governor, as the North Sumatra and Aceh provinces will be the joint hosts of the XXI PON.

Gender equality played role in Indonesia’s independence: BPIP

Indonesia’s founders had anticipated the issue of gender equality long before the nation’s independence, deputy for inter-institutional relations, socialization, communication, and networking for the Pancasila Ideology Education Agency (BPIP), Prakoso, has said.

“Gender equality had been manifested by the establishment of Kartini Schools (Sekolah Kartini) to promote equality between women and men,” he remarked in his keynote speech at a seminar entitled ‘Preparation of Gender Archives as Memory of the World’, which was broadcast live on the YouTube channel of the National Archives of Indonesia on Friday.

Besides Kartini, there were also other female figures who played significant roles in the history of the nation’s struggle, the deputy said.

He then cited the examples of Dewi Sartika who pioneered the education of women, Cut Nyak Dien, who led the fight against the Dutch amid the Aceh War, and Queen Shima, who became the ruler of Kalingga Kingdom after her husband died.

“Moreover, there were two female members of the Committee for Indonesian Independence Preparations (BPUPKI): Maria Ulfah and Siti Sukaptinah,” Prakoso added.

At the BPUPKI meeting, Ulfah proposed that the Constitution of Indonesia include basic rights, including equal rights for women and men, he said.

The second and fifth principles of Indonesia’s Pancasila ideology accommodate her proposal, as the second principle envisages a “just and civilized humanity”, while the fifth one defines “social justice for all Indonesian people”, he added.

Currently, Indonesia has implemented the principle of gender equality by providing equal political opportunities to women so they can become leaders without any gender discrimination, the deputy said.

“One of our former presidents is a woman,” he noted.

In addition, the current chancellor of Bandung Institute of Technology; chancellor of Padjadjaran University; head of Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency; and the Indonesian Finance Minister are women, he pointed out

Hence, Prakoso said he hoped that the archives of Kartini’s struggle and the archives of the First Indonesian Women’s Congress can be listed as Memory of the World by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

“The archives will show the world that Indonesia is one of the countries whose establishment was initiated by the issue of gender equality,” he added.

Ministry asks ITAGI to find best COVID-19 booster

The Ministry of Health has asked the Indonesian Technical Advisory Group on Immunization (ITAGI) to research the best COVID-19 vaccine that can be administered as a booster, an official from the ministry has said.

“(The Health) Minister has asked ITAGI to conduct research on the best vaccine (for booster),” acting director-general of disease prevention and control of the Ministry of Health, Maxi Rein Rondonuwu, said here on Friday.

Currently, the Indonesian government is drafting a procedure for administering COVID-19 booster vaccines to vulnerable groups other than health workers, such as people with disabilities and older adults, he informed.

In addition, COVID-19 booster vaccines will also be prioritized to be administered to Contribution Assistance Recipients (PBI), he said.

Booster vaccines are expected to be administered starting from January 2022, Rondonuwu disclosed.

The research that should be conducted is regarding the administration: whether the booster vaccine needs to be given in a homologous or heterologous manner, he explained.

“There must be a scientific basis; we are still working hard for it. Hopefully, the research will be completed in December, so we would have a basis to decide,” he said.

A third dose or booster vaccine is being considered based on research that has estimated that the efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines decreases after six months of injection, he added.

In a bid to boost immunity against COVID-19, the Indonesian government launched a nationwide vaccination program on January 13, 2021, and President Joko Widodo was the first vaccine recipient under the program.

According to the Health Ministry’s data, as of October 15, 2021, as many as 105,464,686 citizens have received their first COVID-19 vaccine dose, while 61,397,055 have been fully vaccinated against the virus.

Need optimal cooperation to enforce quarantine policy: House Speaker

Optimal cooperation from all parties is needed in enforcing the quarantine policy so that people do not take advantage of it to indulge in illegal acts, House of Representatives (DPR RI) Speaker Puan Maharani has said.

“Optimize cooperation with the TNI (National Defense Forces) and police so that people do not take advantage of quarantine policy (for illegal acts), including cases of fake PCR test results must be guarded as well as possible,” Maharani said in a statement issued here on Friday.

She highlighted quarantine violations by international travelers and asked the COVID-19 task force to be more alert to potential cases of people flouting quarantine processes.

She asked the task force to strictly enforce quarantine rules, including ensuring people arriving from abroad undergo PCR testing again upon arrival.

“Beware of those who try to avoid the quarantine rules. We hope that the officers will give sanctions to anyone who violates the Quarantine Law,” she remarked.

According to Maharani, the government has loosened up the policy therefore she expects better compliance from the public.

The House Speaker also asked for understanding from the Indonesian people and foreign travelers regarding the five-day quarantine rules for international travelers because the policy is necessary for the sake of everyone’s safety.

“We need to take note of how the athletes and officials at the XX Papua PON were disciplined in following the rules. Even though they came with the aim of striving for their region, all the contingents were ordered to undergo quarantine before and after arriving at the venue,” she said.

S Jakarta holds batik fashion show for supporting economic recovery

The South Jakarta Tourism and Creative Economy Office organized a batik fashion show, ‘Pesona Hari Batik Nusantara’, at Setu Babakan cultural village, Jagakarsa sub-district, on Thursday as part of efforts for recovering the economy.

The batik fashion show was a summit event to commemorate National Batik Day on October 2, 2021, officials said.

The fashion show was also held to support national economic recovery, South Jakarta Mayor Munjirin said in a statement received here on Friday.

The event was also held to encourage product quality improvement, development, and marketing, he added.

In marketing the product, some assistance needs to be provided by the government so that business players can continue to innovate and work creatively, the mayor said.

“I am very grateful for the event of ‘Pesona Batik Nusantara’ at South Jakarta, which presented batik fashion show competitions that were participated by (people from) sub-district and village levels,” Munjirin expounded.

A batik clothing competition was also held online for the public, which was aimed to boost people’s pride in wearing or using domestic products, he highlighted.

Chief of Jakarta Women and Children Empowerment Integrated Service Center Komariah Matali and chairwoman of South Jakarta Empowerment team and family welfare, Essie Feransi Munjirin, and other related officials also attended the event.

Matali welcomed and lauded the implementation of the activity.

“Even in the situation of the COVID-19 pandemic, we remain active, creative, and innovative in pursuing many strategic programs for supporting the realization of enriched, productive, and impactful Jakartans communities, especially in South Jakarta,” she said.

Batik has been recognized by UNESCO as an Indonesian cultural heritage since October 2, 2009, she noted.

She said she believed that the event could raise awareness in the community to wear local batik so that batik makers become more eager for producing their best work.

YLKI accentuates importance of food security on World Food Day

Food security must be guaranteed to provide healthy and safe food for the development of a quality and productive Indonesian society, Daily Chairman of the Indonesian Consumers Foundation (YLKI) Tulus Abadi stated.

“Three major aspects pertaining to food supply, food security, and food prices should be taken into account while commemorating World Food Day,” Abadi stated during a virtual speech on “World Food Day, Ensure the Availability of Healthy Food” here on Friday.

Abadi noted that the government had supported the three aspects in ensuring that the community has access to food that is healthy and safe, sufficient food supplies, and affordably priced food.

“If there is supply, accessibility, and security, but the food prices are not affordable, it will become a problem. Hence, these three aspects must be supported by the state in ensuring food safety for the people of Indonesia,” he affirmed.

Abadi highlighted the importance of guaranteeing food security from the upstream to downstream sectors, especially for processed food and its packaging widely opted for by the community.

The food packaging must have a label or a food recycling code that indicates the packaging is safe to use for food.

Abadi pressed for more durable and safer packaging following the latest developments and rising mobility.

To this end, Abadi deemed it necessary to ensure that the food packaging is safe and not contaminated, as it will endanger public health.

For instance, the packaging of bottled water in the market must follow the applicable standards and not pollute food products inside in order to prevent harm to its consumers.

According to Abadi, his team had encouraged the use of plastic food packaging that easily decomposes in the environment or is of biodegradable nature.

“Plastic has an impact on the environment, so we encourage packaging that is biodegradable and easy to perish. It is a prerequisite since currently, plastic consumption is affecting our environment,” he stressed. Moreover, consumers should be heedful of the packaging of processed food or bottled water. He stressed the importance of ensuring that products bear a food-grade labeling and recycling code.

Speaking in connection with the food supply, Abadi noted that the Indonesian government should ensure smooth availability of food supplies for communities nationwide.

“This is because without food distribution, people can find it difficult to access food due to geographical factors, distance, and other aspects,” he stated.

Abadi called on the government to ensure that food prices be made affordable for the community.
